Sea Vegetables are making a splash (back)

(Alternative Medicine Magazine, pages 24-26, January 2001).

With the rising tide of interest in plant nutrients in food and medicine, harvest from the ocean are riding a wave of popularity.Life began in the sea where ocean plants were nourished by the mineral-rich water and filtered sunlight.

Throughout history, plant life from the sea has been valued for its high mineral content and its satisfying variety of tastes and textures. Cultures worldwide, from the hardy Vikings to contemporary Scandinavians, from the coastal natives of the American shores to contemporary coastal residents of the North Atlantic and the Pacific, as well as people throughout Asia, continue to enjoy ocean-harvested vegetables in both traditional and contemporary dishes.

In fact, this ancient food - which archaeologists have even found in Paleolithic burial grounds-may become a key source of nutrients in our new century as soils become depleted of minerals once abundant, and land vegetables are further altered by genetic engineering or pesticide residue.

Sea vegetables contain many nutrients, including protein and vitamin A, B and C. They are low in calories and can be a low sodium food. Up to 85% of the sodium content of sea vegetables is contained in the powdery surface seawater residue, which can be removed with a quick rinsing.*
*The salt protects the sea vegetables from pollutants.

Where sea vegetables are especially valuable, however, is in their essential minerals and trace mineral content. Many sea vegetables contain most, if not all, of sea water’s 77 minerals and rare earth elements. Mineral deficiencies can cause problems from leg cramps to heart disease, whereas a proper intake of minerals can boost both physical and mental health. The minerals in sea vegetables are in a colloidal form, meaning that they retain their identity while remaining in liquid suspension.

Colloids are very small in size and therefore easily absorbed by the cells of the body. Plants convert metallic minerals, which can be toxic, into colloids, with a natural, negative electrical charge. Negatively charged minerals have proven to increase the transport and bioavailability of other nutrients from food and/or supplements. The negative charge also helps attract toxins and heavy metals, allowing them to be eliminated from the body.

Many people have taken advantage of the specific medicinal qualities of sea vegetables. These benefits include immuno-modulating and anti-cancer qualities Alginate, a type of complex carbohydrate (polysaccharide) known for its healing properties, is an important constituent of brown sea vegetables. Observations from studies done in North America, including Harvard, show that alginates bind with heavy metals and toxins from radiation poisoning or other serious environmental chemicals, allowing these to be eliminated through the gastrointestinal tract.

After the nuclear power plant disaster at Chernobyl in 1986, Russian scientists searched for new anti-cancer treatments to heal people who had been exposed to radiation. Looking for a product especially rich in alginates, the researchers in remote Vladivostok, located on the Pacific, went to their obvious source: the ocean.

How Does Phytoplankton Relate To Light Waves And Energy?
By Dr. Robert Rowe Ph.D (excerpt) (back)

My 81 year old mother had been telling me how much energy she had been having since taking the phytoplankton. However she had misunderstood the amount she should be taking – she was consuming mere drops, rather than the proper ounces. Having been a student of homeopathy, it suddenly dawned on me there must be a major energy component activated, even though her dosage was so small.

I was introduced to this plan by a colleague. He had a stubborn case of persistent dandruff for years and nothing would help remedy the embarrassing situation. However, after a week taking phytoplankton, it suddenly stopped. With a little thought, I understand that there was an internal effect going on. With further investigation, I found that this newly discovered miniscule plant also had effects on improving blood sugar problems and even some cancer cases. It was also found that energy increased and muscle soreness after exercise was reduced in people taking it. Some reported that their thinking was clearer, and improvement in blood pressure readings was noticed. It seemed that, on a molecular level, it was activating the energy molecule in the body known as ATP. Notice that I said “energy” molecule."

The work of Fritz Popp came to mind: Dr. Popp, a world renowned physicist, found that living things emit small packets of light called photons. We can see the phosphorescence produced in the ocean when the water is stirred at night; we are able to see the sparkling photon light produced. Dr. Popp was able to show that the effects of a compound could be duplicated just by bombarding water with the electromagnetic frequency of the compound, which is how homeopathy works. (view free online video demonstration the energy produced by phytoplankton)

Some people may know the work of Dr. Emoto concerning the effects of positive energy on water, and the remarkably beautiful ice crystals that are formed when water is blessed by Zen priests. It seems that water is able to take on these positive aspects. Believing this and knowing that we are, for the most part, water, it makes sense, then that we should only put into our bodies those foods and nutrients that have the highest quality, most positive frequency of energy (referred to as “high frequency,” rather than negative or poor quality “low frequency”).

Phytoplankton, then, the foundation of life in the ocean, the forerunner of life on land, and the sustainer of our atmosphere, would have an extremely high energy frequency (in addition to its physical properties, which have a nutrient content). The future of the human race is challenged more and more by manmade hazards: electromagnet “smog” (negative energy waves from technology) depleting our brain chemistry and immune systems, industrial toxins in our bodies, processed compounds portrayed as food on the grocery shelves, and the high stress demands of family and work.

It is reassuring to know that a microscopic but highly powerful organism like phytoplankton contains the positive energy that we need to thrive despite these hazards. It offers sufficient amino acids to help replace the depleted nervous system, chlorophyll to help remove toxins, and nutrients to keep our cells powered to fight the battle against these stressors. The future is in the hands of those who understand the power of energy within our bodies and within the life forces provided to us. Excerpts from Senate Document 264 (back)

The following excerpt was issued by the United States Congress in 1936:

In 1936 the United States Senate issued Document 264 relating to proper food mineral balances presented by Mr. Fletcher. The pioneers of this era and the genius in the field of nutrition demonstrated that countless human ills stem from the fact that impoverished soil in America no longer provides plant foods with the mineral elements essential to human nourishment and health! The pertinent excerpts from this document are published here for your review:

“Do you know that most of us today are suffering from certain dangerous diet deficiencies which cannot be remedied until the depleted soils from which our foods come from are brought into proper mineral balance?”

“The alarming fact is that foods - fruits, vegetables and grains - now being raised on millions of acres of land that no longer contains enough of certain minerals, are starving us - no matter how much of them we eat!”

“This talk of minerals is novel and quite startling. In fact, a realization of the importance of minerals in food is so new that the textbooks on nutritional dietetics contain very little about it. Nevertheless it is something that concerns all of us, and the further we delve into it the more startling it becomes”.

“Laboratory tests prove that the fruits, the vegetables, the grains, the eggs and even the milk and meats of today are not what they were a few generations ago. No man of today can eat enough fruits and vegetables to supply his system with the mineral salts he requires for perfect health. We are fast becoming a country of fat bellies.”

“No longer does a balanced and fully nourishing diet consist merely of so many calories or certain vitamins or a fixed proportion of starches, proteins, and carbohydrates. We now know that it must contain, in addition, something like a score of trace mineral salts”.

“It is bad news to learn from our leading authorities that 99 percent of the American people are deficient in these minerals, and that a marked deficiency in any one of the more important minerals actually results in DISEASE. Any upset of the balance, any considerable lack of one or another element, however microscopic the body requirement may be, and we sicken, suffer, shorten our lives”.

“This discovery is one of the latest and most important contributions of science to the problem of human health”.

“Dr. Northern asked himself how foods can be used intelligently in the treatment of disease, when they differed so widely in content. The answer seemed to be that they could not be used intelligently. In establishing the fact that serious deficiencies existed and in searching out the reasons therefore, he made an extensive study of the soil. It was he who first voiced the surprising fact that we must make soil building the basis of food building in order to accomplish human building. Bear in mind, says Dr. Northern, that minerals are vital to human metabolism and health-and that no plant or animal can appropriate to itself any mineral which is not present in the soil upon which it feeds.”

“We know that vitamins are complex chemical substances which are indispensable to nutrition, and that each of them is important for the normal function of some special structure of the body. Disorder and disease result from any vitamin deficiency. It is not commonly realized, however, that vitamins control the body’s appropriation of minerals, and that in the absence of minerals they have no function to perform. Lacking vitamins, the system can make some use of minerals, but lacking minerals, vitamins are useless”.

“Certainly our physical well being is more directly dependent upon the minerals we take in to our system than upon calories or vitamins or upon the precise proportions of starch, protein or carbohydrates we consume.”

“So it goes, each mineral element playing a definite role in nutrition. A characteristic set of symptoms, just as specific as any vitamin deficiency disease, follows a deficiency in any one of them. It is alarming, therefore,to face the fact that we are starving for these precious health-giving substances.”

“The minerals in fruit and vegetables are colloidal; i.e., they are in a state of such extremely fine suspension that they can be assimilated by the human system. There in lies the short cut to better health and longer life.”

“Sick soils mean sick plants, sick animals, and sick people. Physical, mental and moral fitness depends largely upon an ample supply and a proper proportion of minerals in our foods. Nerve function, nerve stability and nerve cell-building likewise depend upon trace minerals.”

“Our soils which are seriously deficient in trace minerals, cannot produce plant life competent to maintain our needs, and with the continuous cropping and shipping away of those trace minerals and concentrates, the condition becomes worse”.
“One sure way to end the American people’s susceptibility to infection is to supply through food, a balanced ration of trace minerals. An organism supplied with a diet adequate to, or preferably in excess of, all mineral requirements may so utilize these elements as to produce immunity from infection quite beyond anything we are able to produce artificially by our present method of immunization. You can’t make up the deficiency by using a patent medicine or drug.”

“Prevention of disease is easier, more practical, and more economical than cure. Disease preys most surely and most viciously on the undernourished and unfit plants, animals and human beings alike, and when the importance of these obscure mineral elements is fully realized, the chemistry of life will have to be rewritten. No man knows his mental or bodily capacity, how well he can feel or how long he can live, for we are all cripples and weaklings.”

“It is a disgrace to science. Happily, that chemistry is being rewritten and we are on our way to better health by returning to our bodies the things (trace minerals) we have stolen from it.”
